You may have noticed that Telamco manufactures membrane switches? The term custom membrane switch is referenced quite often.

What is a custom membrane switch?

Basically all membrane switches manufactured by Telamco are custom. A membrane switch (man machine interface) is made by screen printing conductive inks in a specifically designed pattern onto a heat stabilized polyester substrate. A graphic is added to the circuit using adhesive. When a button is pressed it makes a connection with the circuit thereby communicating with the equipment or device.

Technical Components of Custom Membrane Switches

Each membrane switch is manufactured to a unique design and specification. Telamco does not have a stockpile of generic product sitting on the shelf. Each one is manufactured to submitted specifications in our Minnesota based location. Membrane switches, dome switch keyboards, or other terms that you may use, control other products. Various types of circuits are used in the product design – screened silver, flexible printed circuits, printed circuit boards. Different connectors support smooth communication with the end product such as; printed traces-ZIF, male/female connectors – latching and polaized and solder tabs. These items are like the brain of the product.

Visual and Mechanical Components of a Custom Membrane Switch

There are some parts of custom membrane switches that are more visual and the mechanical function of a membrane switch. Again, each design determines what and how these parts are incoporated into the product, which is what makes it custom. Here are a few examples:

• Graphic Overlays – The top layer or interface of the product. Identifies how to use the product. Each button color, shape, description and look can be different.
• Lighting – Choose between backlighting and embedded LEDs, light placement, color and function.
• Back Panels – Decide if you need a back panel or bezel to support the product and provide easy installation.
• Button Response – Creating a visual and tactile button with domes, embossing and graphics
